Bed bugs are making a strong comeback in student accommodation, including those managed by CROUS in Orleans, Créteil, Lille, Montpellier and many other French cities. With over 170,000 units under management, student residences are particularly affected by this phenomenon. In 2020, a record number of reports were recorded, illustrating the scale of the problem.
Infestations in student residences
University halls of residence are ideal breeding grounds for bed bugs, due to the high turnover of students each year. With such a high turnover and the many trips made by young people, it’s not uncommon for some to unwittingly bring back bedbugs in their suitcases. Once introduced, these parasites quickly spread to entire rooms and buildings, making the situation unbearable for many students. Some even abandon their studies because of the unsanitary conditions. In addition to bed bugs, many residences also have to contend with cockroach infestations, adding to residents’ discomfort.
CROUS efforts to combat bed bugs
CROUS has taken steps to limit the spread of bed bugs by implementing four annual preventive treatments in its residences, as well as an annual control visit. These measures represent an investment of 100,000 euros per year, but do not seem to be enough to put a definitive stop to the problem.
As part of the €250 billion economic stimulus package, €100 billion has been earmarked for the rehabilitation of CROUS housing. By 2024, all these residences should be renovated with more suitable materials, including the elimination of carpets that encourage insect proliferation. However, even the most recent residences are not spared from bed bugs.
Psychological impact of infestations
Bed bug infestations have a major impact on students’ mental health. The stress associated with these pests can have serious psychological consequences. That’s why the government has set up a psychological support plan, enabling students to benefit from 8 free sessions with a psychologist or psychiatrist, with no advance payment. More information is available on the Santé Psy website.
Prevention campaign and support
In parallel, a number of associations offer support to students, and the government has launched a prevention campaign to provide information on how to protect yourself against bed bugs. You can find information and advice on the EN ecologie.gouv.fr website, or call the dedicated information number on 0 806 706 806.
