Bed bugs and the 2024 Olympic Games: a growing concern

27 November 2023

Pest treatment experts in Paris are expressing growing concern about the potential threat of proliferating rats, bed bugs, and tiger mosquitoes in the run-up to the 2024 Olympic Games. The summer season aligned with the dates of the Games and the massive influx of visitors create an environment conducive to the presence andexploding numbers of these pests in Paris, and France. Professionals warn that, without effective waste management, rats will reproduce rapidly, and temporary rentals will encourage an increase in bed bug infestations.

Stéphane Bras, spokesman for CS3D (Chambre Syndicale des Professionnels du Traitement des Désinfections et Dératisation), says: We’ll be facing an explosive cocktail of pests. The overabundance of waste generated by the Games will provide an ideal breeding ground for rodents. Some experts are already recommending intensified pest control in hotels, while advocating widespread deratting throughout the region. Individuals planning to rent out their apartments on platforms such as Airbnb are also at increased risk of bed bug infestation. As for tiger mosquitoes, the risk of proliferation is high due to recent native cases of dengue fever reported in France in recent months.
